Sosua

Sosúa is a beach town twenty minutes east of Puerto Plata, right next to the international airport (POP).

Sosua

It grew out of a settlement founded by Jewish refugees in the 1940s – a synagogue and a small museum in the El Batey district still tell that story. The main horseshoe-shaped bay is sheltered from the waves, with calm, clear water, which is why Sosúa is where people come for snorkeling and scuba diving. Dive centres line the reef, and the wreck of La Zingara, resting not far offshore, is one of the best-known dive sites on the north coast. The second beach, Playa Alicia, is quieter and more spacious – and a fine spot to watch the sunset. With Sunny Dominicana you can book north coast tours and boat trips from Sosúa, from waterfalls and jungle rides to days out on the open ocean. And thanks to the airport next door, Sosúa is often both the first and the last stop of a north coast itinerary.
