The town hosts international kite and windsurf competitions, nearby Playa Encuentro has the best surfing waves on the island, and after sunset life moves to the bars and restaurants set right on the sand. Just outside town lies El Choco National Park with its caves and lagoons, and Sosúa and the POP airport are about twenty minutes away by car. Cabarete works just as well if you don't ride: with Sunny Dominicana you can head out from here on north coast tours – to waterfalls, mountains and jungle – or take a boat trip out to sea. The wind in the bay blows almost all year round, so the season in Cabarete runs longer than at most resorts on the island, and the town stays lively even between seasons.
