Its Colonial Zone is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the first cathedral of the Americas, the Alcázar de Colón palace where Christopher Columbus's son lived, and Calle de las Damas, the first paved street on the continent. Nearby are the pedestrian El Conde street with its cafés and souvenir shops, the Malecón seafront along the Caribbean Sea and the underground lakes of Los Tres Ojos at the edge of the city. With Sunny Dominicana you can book tours of the Colonial Zone, as well as day trips and boat excursions from the capital towards the east coast. Santo Domingo sits on the island's southern, Caribbean shore and pairs easily with a beach holiday in the east: Punta Cana is about two hours away by expressway.
